Backstitch Bruja

Hello! My name is Yvette the owner behind Backstitch Bruja. One day I taught myself how to sew and showcased my DIY items on Instagram. To my surprise I received a ton of requests to start my own store. Being a plus size Queer Latina, I wanted to make sure all my items were gender fluid and ethically made. In the Fall of 2018, I launched Backstitch Bruja and have been creating a variety of handmade items ever since. As my page grew, I began collaborating with a variety of handcrafted shops to help my ideas come to life!

My family is originally from Sinaloa, Mexico and came to the US in the 1970s. My parents always motivated to go to school and follow my dreams. In 2013, I graduated from the University of California Santa Barbara with a degree in Chicano/a Studies. During this time, I worked in a lot of retail stores which unbeknownst to me helped me in all the facets of running my own business.

Today, most of my relatives including my parents are small business owners. Growing up in a home full of entrepreneurs definitely motivated me to quit my job and focus on Backstitch Bruja full time. Although, I didn’t  plan for any of this, going into business for myself was always the dream. I have a hand in each step of the process: from creating the designs, to selecting fabrics, sewing, Instagram, emails, communicating with my manufacturers and shipping. Its a lot of labor of love but I have been blessed with a community of creeps that motivate me to continue and grow my little shop!

I’m so grateful for all the wonderful opportunities that have come my way. I’m thankful for all of you, thank you for your constant love and support. This has been quite a journey and I’m so happy to share my ideas and crafts with all my fellow brujitas! 🎃
