Thank you for visiting Lavender & Thieves Co and making your way to the About Us Page. This is my passion. My name is Jackie Coburn, and Lavender & Thieves Co is my creation.
This business was born out of my sincere love for tea and the joy and connection it brings to me and all who partake in the ritual. Lavender and Thieves Co. will feel like a sanctuary for those who love tea and all things steeped in the traditions of tea and its culture. It’s also a place to share ideas for those wanting to incorporate that witch makes you feel connected and authentic. It’s a coven of sorts. Hope you feel welcome here, and because YOU are here, this community is all the better.
As an autistic person in a world that encourages me to be more like them and less like me, I have often shied away from mainstream ways of connecting with peers. This is sometimes a lonely way to navigate life. Thanks to my love of tea, cultures, magic, and all things witchy I have found a community that I can connect with on my terms that feels fulfilling, sustaining and real.
Connection happens instantly with a shared experience. Social barriers disappear and you can see someone on more of a human level. I love that! For those reason and a few more related to my love of old stuff, old peoples and old traditions, I am currently working on my degree to become an Anthropologist at the University of Vermont. Ultimately I picture myself traveling the globe, meeting new people in their communities, learning more about their lives and also their tea rituals and then sharing those stories right here. So stay tuned.
Another one of my passions relates to the fascinating centuries of the medieval period. That time, rightfully so, has retained its unique importance in our evolution with its contribution of paganism, rituals and witchcraft. I align and wholeheartedly believe in the power that is naturally part of our universe and all the elements in it. I have enjoyed using the healing herbs and radiant oils to layer significance and meaning into the intentions for my life. This is also where I found my favourite blend of herbs — Thieves. It’s a 15th century concoction of cinnamon, rosemary, clove, eucalyptus, and lemon. As legend has it, four thieves during the Black Death in 1413 stole from the sick and dying, but they never contracted the disease. Once they were caught for their crimes, they told the judge how they were able to stay immune. They placed this Thieves blend around their limbs and airways which allowed them to walk freely around the ill without retreating from the stench. After their death by hanging for their crime’s, this method caught on and was used as protection against the Black Death. Today, we know these herbs to be antibacterial which might have actually helped against the bacterial infection we know as the Black Death or Yersinia pestis. So it stands to reason that this blend is commonly used in the modern homeopathic world to help against respiratory illnesses.
I hope when you visit Lavender & Thieves Co. you leave with the feeling of magic and are inspired by learning the historical significances of tea and herbs and want to use them in your daily life. Through the power of imagery, aroma, the written word, and the flavor of fabulous teas, I hope you are excited to create your own mindful rituals around tea and connection to a community that make you feel grounded and present in your life. There is always time to put a little magic into your day. I hope to meet again soon.
Ta ta for now,
Jackie
